Online dating is one of the most popular ways people meet today. It's an easy way to find people you have similar qualities and interests with, and to try to build a relationship. Amy Webb discusses this in her TED talk, and how she "hacked" the system- and ended up finding true love.
Amy Webb is an award-winning journalist and speaker who wanted to get her life started. She was in her 30's and still hadn't maintained a relationship or had any children- so she decided to try out online dating. She made some profiles and landed her first date with a guy she had some similar interests with. He took her out to one of the more high-end restaurants where they lived, and ordered tons and tons of food- and then left. Webb had to pay a bill that was $1,500, which was a whole month's rent. Needless to say, she knew she wasn't going to find her future husband at this rate, so she upped her game.
Webb decided to scope out her competition, the other women on the website who were interested in the same men as she was. She monitored all of these girls pictures, everything they said, and everything they had on their profiles to create what she called a "super profile". It was basically a combination of all of the things included in these other girls profiles that worked best with guys, but it was still Webb's information. To her surprise, this worked out extremely well- she was the most popular person on the online dating world for a long while, and she was getting emails left and right from guys interested in her. The tables had definitely turned at this point; she now had multiple men that wanted to date her, but she had to choose which ones she would actually want to date back. Being a smart individual who excels by using tables and models, Webb created a scoring system with multiple different qualities she wanted in a guy and ranked them based on how important it was to her. She decided at a certain number of points she would message the guy back, go on a date with him, or consider a long-time relationship. Based on this system she created, she wasn't finding any men that she could date- until a guy named Brian came along. Looking at his profile he immediately scored enough points for a date. Eventually, Brian proposed to Amy and a year later they had their first child.
This TED talk was one of the most interesting ones I've seen yet. Immediately hearing some of Webb's stories with relationships, you relate to everything she's saying, and she manages to put a humorous spin on all of the things she tells you. You can tell by the way she speaks and shows all of the data and tables that she's extremely intelligent, and it pulls you in even more to hear how everything proccesses in her mind. She conveys her point with a very happy and funny tone, which grabs us as an audience and pulls us in. I felt like I could relate to a lot of the points she made, and when she got her happy ending you couldn't help but feel happy yourself.
Amy Webb is one of the only people you will hear of that "hacked" the system of online dating, gone on multiple horrible dates, and in the end managed to make her way out happily married with a daughter. Online dating wasn't easy for her, but it was definitely worth it.
